Project examples

Cape Life is proud to have contributed to hundreds of important landscape rehabilitation and biodiversity projects throughout Western Australia. Please see below a selection of some of these projects.

Ludlow, Gwindinup and Wonnerup Rehabilitation for Tronox Mining

Our company has provided Seed Collection and planting programs across multiple Tronox operations in the South West from 2015 – 2023. This long-term project has resulted in several RIAWA awards, demonstrating our capacity to provide successful large scale rehabilitation works with varying methodologies, while carrying out work safely and efficiently in a mining environment.

ALCOA Rehabilitation

In partnership with Seed Shed, we have supplied native seed for Alcoa’s revegetation requirements since 2015. We have also provided a large scale revegetation service for 4 years since 2019, involving teams of over 20 planters across over 500 hectares each year. In this time, Cape Life has planted over 1,500,000 seedlings at this site.

Pilbara Collections

Cape Life has been involved in remote site seed recovery programs in the Pilbara for over a decade (since 2012). These collection programs have ranged from Newman, to Port Hedland, Panawonicca and Tom Price. Trips have included targeted collections for specific species and projects, as well as bulk collections for large scale mining rehabilitation. Most recently we have begun harvesting native grasses which can be conducted in Autumn.

Arum Lily Blitz with Nature Conversation Margaret River and the State Government of WA

The arum lily control and eradication program began in 2017 and Cape Life has been the key contractor since this time. We work alongside Nature Conservation, private landholders and DBCA to effectively manage this invasive species. Our fully trained, experienced and licensed operators have been effective at reducing the scale and spread of arum lilly’s across a range of sensitive landscapes.

Yoongarillup Mine Rehabilitation for Doral Mineral Sands

Cape Life has established a high level rehabilitation program for Doral Mineral Sands to transition a mined landscape to a stable landform in a short period of time. The 10 hectare site on the Whicher scarp has been rehabilitated via a combination of recalcitrant seedling planting, top soil management/recruitment and direct seeding of 93 different species.

Warren River Riparian Vegetation for Warren Catchments Council

Over three years our team consulted on riparian habitat rehabilitation methodology and installed 390,000 seedlings in the Riparian Zones along the Warren River.

Margaret River Perimeter Road and Gravel Pits for Main Roads / Fulton Hogan

Cape Life has been involved in the revegetation program for the Margaret River Perimeter Road and associated gravel pits since 2014. It has involved rehabilitation of the Vlam, Wests and Bramely gravel pits, consultation on rehabilitation methodology, native seed collection, revegetation installation, monitoring, maintenance and reporting.

Carbon + Biodiversity Revegetation for Voyager

This important revegetation project initiated in 2022 involved the collection of over 30 kilograms of provenance seed for the rehabilitation of a 22 hectare site in the heart of Margaret River. Our team utilised alternative methods of site preparation to reduce the use of inorganic herbicides.
